Independent breeding

  • The imported pigs are purebred pigs, officially registered in Canadian herdbook for many generations. After importation, we have adapted the breeding goal and selection criteria to Chinese conditions. Based on the needs of the Chinese market, the breeding traits of the sire line pigs (Duroc) are set to increase daily weight gain, eye muscle area and intramuscular fat as well as to decrease backfat thickness, and feed conversion ratio For sow line pigs (Changbai and Dabai) breeding goal traits is dedicated to increase number of live born piglets, daily weight gain and eye muscle area as well as to decreasebackfat thickness, feed conversion rate, and weaning to mating interval.
  • The overall selection is based on breeding male and female pigs that are suitable for China's management (feeding, health and labour) environment.
  • The focus is in sow lines (4400 Yorkshire sows and 1000 Landrace sows 100% pure breeding) on improving efficiency for Chinese farm conditions: strong fertility in combination with good motherhood, strong disease resistance, and also efficient pork production (low feed costs).
  • Duroc (600 sows 100% pure breeding) is focussed on production of slaughter pigs adapted to the climate environment and market demand in the north and south of China: with characteristics such as good feed efficiency,thin backfat with fast growth, disease resistance and good conformation.
  • After 7 years of genetic improvement, the characteristics of the current breeding pigs are quite different from those of the imported breeding pigs. They can be called our own domestic breeds . The performance achieves stable genetic progress and the breeding pigsgot rid of the introduction and degradation problems

Both farms can provide swine fever vaccine-positive, pigs without wild virus infection.
Both farms can provide FMD vaccine-positive, pigs without wild virus infection.
Both farms can provide breeding pigs that are negative for pseudorabies gE antibodies and are free of wild virus infection.
One farm can provide blue ear antigens, antibody double negative breeding pigs.
One farm can provide stable blue-eared breeders.

Molecular Breeding Alliance

In November 2016, a team of China Agricultural University and five Chinese breeding pig companies established the “pig genome selection “Beijing Alliance” for large-scale genetic testing; all five Chinese breeding pig companies imported from Canada in 2014-2016. The breeding pig companies introduced by Jiayu Company all have the same breeds, genetic background and common ancestors

Beijing Kangpusen Biotechnology Co., Ltd. is the designated testing unit, and the 55K chip developed by it in cooperation with China Agricultural University is used for testing. The testing started in 2016 for Yorkshire but nowadays all 3 breeds are tested and DNA information used for Genomic Selection.

Genomic breeding:

  • Predicting of breeding values on a combination of phenotypic and genome-wide markers.
  • Annually more than 12.500 breeding pigs (YY, LL and DD) are sampled for DNA analysis and their data are used in estimation of breeding values.
  • Genomic selection is more accurate, especially for low heritability traits, such as feed conversion efficiency and reproductive traits, and in that way improves genetics progess substantially (20-70% more progress depending on the trait)..

The Pig breeding farms have professional equipment for measurements and registration of pig’s performances;  there are special measuring ultrasoundEuropean Exago back fat and loin depth/area analyzers
70 sets of NEDAP individual pig performance measurement system, (measuring  dailygain and feed intake), started in May 2017, and application of the scanning deviceto estimate intramuscular fat (BioSoft Tool Box II) on Duroc.
